“All America lies at the end of the wilderness road, and our past is not a dead past, but still lives in us. Our forefathers had civilization inside themselves, the wild outside. We live in the civilization they created, but within us the wilderness still lingers.” – Thomas K. Whipple

As hunters, I think it is safe to say that most of us have felt that tug on our souls of the wild within calling us to explore and partake in the world outside. But in today’s day and age, there is an increasingly larger number of people that don’t get any closer to the wilderness than streetside coney dogs and a walk through Harlem. These folks are shocked by the idea of venturing outside of their city dwellings and disgusted by the idea of killing their own food or at best unaware of the whole idea! And it is for these people that I am most excited for “The Wild Within.”

“The Wild Within” is a new show on The Travel Channel hosted by Steve Rinella and it could quite possibly be one of the most impactful hunting shows to ever hit the networks. Broadcasting to a mainstream, more so non-hunting audience, “The Wild Within” has shared with the masses an incredibly positive look at the modern day hunter and how we fit into today’s world. For once the larger non-hunting world will see a responsible, positive picture of today’s hunter, rather than the crazed redneck stereotype that the “Anti’s” like to paint us as.

As described on the Travel Channel website, “Steven will reveal his deep conviction that within all of us, an instinctual hunter/gatherer is waiting to come out. In each breathtaking episode, Steven uses his pioneer spirit, resourceful mentality and outdoor skills to explore the subcultures that cherish and maintain their hunting, fishing and gathering traditions. Steven stays true to the tradition of sustenance hunting. Nothing that he harvests goes to waste, and he only pursues abundant species that are properly managed in order to protect their long-term ecological sustainability.”

All this being said, I’m very excited to watch this show myself and to share it with my friends. I’d definitely recommend tuning in to the Travel Channel on Sunday nights at 9:00 EST to check it out for yourself!
