I’ve been patiently waiting to say this for over 9 months, so here goes. My first hunts of 2011 are officially in the books! Unfortunately no buck is on the ground.  My buddy Dustin and I took the trip down to SW Ohio for the weekend and I gotta say, despite our lack of success, getting in a tree sure felt good.

Over the course of the two days we put 20 hours on stands, but only saw deer for about 15 minutes of that. The deer we did see were three doe and one small spike. Less than stellar, but so it goes.  On the bright side, we did learn the farm a little better and we also got our first real shooter on trailcam. More on that later!

In addition to what we learned on the farm, we also spotted a dandy 150 class, 10 point typical just down the road in a beanfield. Which was another good indicator of the quality of bucks we can expect to see come the rut. Needless to say, despite the poor showing this weekend, I’ve still got high hopes for our next trip. Which, speaking of, is coming up in a little over a month! Our true Ohio trip will be the second week in November and hopefully over the course of that week we’ll be able to get it done. Until then we’ll be patiently awaiting our next try at those Buckeye whitetails. So although the Ohio bucks won this battle, the war has just begun…
