This weekend a quick trip to Ohio was in the plans to pull down a few tree stands and retrieve a long lost trail cam. We had these two important goals in mind, but we didn’t really have our hopes up for velvet footage at all, given how early it is still in the summer. Boy did our expectations get blown out of the water!

With a little extra time to spare upon our arrival in Southern Ohio on Saturday night, we decided to take a drive around the area and we were rewarded with some dandy velvet bucks. The buck pictured above on the right is a down right giant, with so much growth as this point of the year and a sticker off his right base to boot! We also saw another big gnarly old buck in another section.

So with all that having happened, I was about as happy as could be – and very excited again about our prospects in Ohio. Being on a big buck high, I couldn’t help but take a drive around my neck of the woods upon arriving home. Again expectations were low on this joy ride around the country, and again I was happily surprised. Surprised probably isn’t the right word – I was floored. After cruising for a half hour or so I came upon the mother load.  About 15 deer in a soybean field, of which two looked like they had potential to turn into maybe 120″ers, another that should be bigger than that – and last, a true Michigan giant. Really wide, great tine length and a huge body. The buck could stop growing today and already be a shooter for almost anyone, and it’s only JUNE 10! I’m seriously pumped to see what this buck will turn out to be after two more months of growing. Fingers crossed that I’ll see this buck again and hopefully can get better pictures or footage in the future too. For now, we’re left with some grainy footage from a distance – as seen below…
