The best hunting related movie of all time? Quite possibly. Or at least the most laugh-out-loud worthy. If you’ve never heard of Escanaba in Da Moonlight, you’re missing out. But right now, and I’m not sure for how long it will last, the full film is available for free on YouTube.
Escanaba in Da Moonlight is the story of the “Buckless Yooper”, a character played by Jeff Daniels, who lives and hunts in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, but has embarrassingly never killed a buck. The movie is ridiculous, but it’s also (at most times) a hilariously accurate depiction of northern Michigan hunting tradition, and I imagine that of a number of other Upper Great Lakes states. Things get a little weird about 50 minutes in, haha, but up to that point it’s good ole fashion deer camp goodness.
So if you need a few laughs today, give this one a watch and prepare yourself for some pretty epic one-liners.
